Talking to your roommate about issues

Wednesday, June 04, 2008

No matter how perfect you get along with your roommate, there are going to be times when a good heart to heart is needed. It could be because one of you is a neat freak and the other is messy or it could be a noise related issue, but regardless of the issue, making sure you approach your heart to heart in the right way can make all of the difference. Here are a few tips.

First, make sure that you aren’t sitting your roommate down for a serious talk after every first offence. Often times, people are simply clumsy or inconsiderate by accident and they may do something once that they will never do again, or at least not on a regular basis. Having 4 serious talks a week can build up a lot of resentment between two people and that can lead to its own set of problems. Try to make your serious talks only about serious things.

Above all else, make sure you stay calm. The last thing either of you needs is a shouting match and a permanent break of your friendship and living arrangement. It’s safe to say that we all have enough drama in our lives without going through new roommates every few weeks. Keep your cool and talk things out like adults.

Finally, don’t be afraid to use an arbitrator for serious problems that the two of you can’t get over. Many landlords would be more than happy to help solve a problem instead of having to look for new tenants.

What Can a Roommate Do For You?

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Renting an apartment can be great fun and give you a great place to live.  The cost of rent can be somewhat prohibitive, though, leading to you having to take an apartment that you don’t really want so that you’ll be able to afford the monthly rent.  There is a way around this, though, that will allow you to get the apartment that you want and still stay within your budget.  Roommates are a great way to save money and cut costs involved with renting an apartment.Your roommate will do much more than just split the rent with you.  They will also pay half of the other utilities in the apartment, cable, Internet access and more. You can actually come out saving much more money than you would by getting an apartment with lower rent.  You can cut your costs down to a fraction of what they would otherwise be.  If there are enough bedrooms and you and your roommate are both ok with it, you can even bring in another roommate to cut down on the cost of living even more.

A roommate can be more than just a financial benefit, though.  They can become a valued friend, as well.  Even if you don’t get along as well as you’d like, your roommate can offer companionship and a listening ear when you need one.  A roommate is a great way to make a lasting friend and save money at the same time.

Roommates: Dealing With Stress

Wednesday, November 07, 2007

Getting a roommate can be the best thing you ever did.  Conversely, it can wind up being a miserable experience if you choose the wrong roommate or don’t know how to work through the problems that are going to arise.  Roommates require a lot of effort, but once you get things going well, you’ll understand how to keep it going well. There are two key things to remember when dealing with roommates and the problems that arise from them: communication and compromise.  Both of these are necessary to keep things running on an even keel.  Without them, you and your roommate will remain at loggerheads, struggling to come to terms over even the simplest, most mundane things.

Communication, or the lack of it, is the cause of many roommate problems.  Whether it’s a lack of help cleaning the apartment, late bills, loud radios while you’re sleeping or anything else, chances are that you didn’t communicate your needs and desires to them in the right way to make them understand what their behavior is causing. Try talking with them; be blunt, honest and forthright.  Expect them to be the same way.  Once you’ve aired the problem out, you may be surprised at the change that overcomes them.  Many times, they simply don’t realize what is going on.  Remember, they are not mind readers and may not even know your desires.

Compromise is required on all fronts when dealing with a roommate.  If you expect them to be quiet while you’re sleeping, you should expect them to have something they want you to do.  Compromise will allow the two of you to come to agreeable terms.

Roommates and Renter’s Insurance

Friday, November 02, 2007

The need for renter’s insurance is vast.  Everyone that rents, whether it’s an apartment or another type of rental property, needs renter’s insurance.  It is the only way that all of your possessions are protected from loss, theft or destruction.  It also protects your assets from lawsuits stemming from someone coming to injury within your apartment. Many people assume that the apartment complex’s insurance will cover their stuff in the event of a disaster or theft, but that is not true. The only thing that the landlord’s insurance covers it the building and its physical infrastructure like stairs and elevators.  Your stuff is your responsibility.

Each roommate is required to have his or her own renter’s insurance policy.  Your policy will not extend to your roommate’s stuff and vice versa.

According to recent studies, less than 25% of renters actually have renter’s insurance.  The need for a change is great.  Many people are shocked and surprised when something happens to their things and no one steps forward to replace them, or when they are sued for medical bills stemming from an accident in their apartment. Being an informed renter is important and knowing the need for renter’s insurance is one good way to be informed.

Some people discount renter’s insurance due to the fact that it adds another bill on top of their already mounting expenses, but the low cost of this insurance coupled with the likelihood that it will be needed make it evident that renter’s insurance should be considered a necessity rather than an option.

How to Find a Roommate

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Finding a roommate is often a necessity when renting an apartment. They cut down on bills and help disperse the cost of living.  Roommates can be a great asset when renting an apartment; so, how do you go about finding one?  There are a lot of different ways to find a roommate.Ask your friends. Are any of them looking for a place to live?  Do any of them need to move from where they’re currently living?  Your friends can be a great pool to find a roommate in.  This will also help you avoid any awkward introductory phases and help you become even better friends.

You can use an online roommate finding service.  This will let you select from a lot of different people in your area that are looking for a place to live that matches the criteria you provide about the apartment.  You can check previous references, read about their interests, personality, habits and interests. Roommate finding services can provide you with an excellent way to find a roommate that will work for you.

Putting an ad in your local paper can also be a good way to find a roommate.  This is an excellent way to get the word out that you need a roommate and get responses from local applicants.  You can request as many references as you feel are necessary, set up convenient meeting times and more.

You can also list your needs online.  There are a number of places to post a room for rent on the Internet and you gain the anonymity of email in the bargain.

Handling Roommate Disputes

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

No matter how close you and your roommate are, there are bound to be some disputes between the two of you.  It’s inevitable that complications and concerns will arise between two people sharing a living space.  There are some good tips to cut down on the number of frustrations and miscommunications, though.  These will make your renting experience better.Make a list of chores.  Each person should be responsible for cleaning the apartment up.  This area is one of the most frequent sources of tension between roommates.  If possible, have each roommate clean his or her own dishes, laundry and specific sections of the apartment.  The areas of the apartment can be on a rotating basis so that no one feels left out or put out.

Rent and utility payment is another area of friction between roommates.  It should be understood that bills are due at a certain point during the month and that payment is required during that time.  It can be tempting to help someone out when they are strapped for cash, but this can actually backfire on you and lead to more turmoil.  Having everyone pay his or her fair share on a timely basis is the best approach.

Making life with a roommate succeed requires compromise.  Each person will want their own areas, space to display their stuff and more.  Compromising is the only way to make living with a roommate feasible.  It also requires that both parties compromise; if only one side constantly compromises, it will lead to even greater friction.

Find the Right Roommate

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

A roommate can be a great asset when renting an apartment.  They help you pay the bills, offer friendship and generally help around the apartment.  There are sources of friction between roommates, it’s almost unavoidable.  Regardless of whether you and your roommate are lifelong friends or strangers before renting together, there will be times that trouble arises.  Finding the right roommate can go a long way towards smoothing over these troubling times.Finding the right roommate doesn’t require luck, though it may seem so. The best way to find a roommate that you will be able to live with is to make a list of the qualities needed in someone sharing your living space.

List qualities like honesty, cleanliness, a capacity to compromise and anything else you can think of that will help the two of you get along though the rough times that will most certainly arise.

Once you have this list made, it’s time to place that ad.  You can put an ad in the local paper, on the Internet or through several other means.  Be sure to put in the ad that references will be required.  Never take on a roommate without references unless you know them extremely well. Without references, you have no way to tell if they have a history of not paying rent, of not living up to obligations or any other problems.

Once you have some responses, it’s time to interview your candidates.  Keep all the qualities on the list in mind when interviewing these people and ask questions that will give you responses that tell you something about the person.
